First up this was by far the hardest year for me as a judge the anglianhome.co.uk/styledbyme competition, the talent and standard are just through the roof! So I’ve had to up my criteria. Not only am I looking for creativity, innovation, colour scheming magic and excellent styling I have also taken into account how well styled and shot the room is. I think most of these have probably been shot on a phone but getting the composition and lighting right is all part of creating a winning entry.
WINNER
Shown above, this bathroom is a real show stopper as it breaks all the rules but does it in such a stylish and creative way. First up I love to see patterned wallpaper in a small bathroom, as it really adds a splash of character and interest. But this basin cabinet is the winner for me. I love hoe @liznylon has taken the colour palette from the wallpaper and onto the drawer fronts creating this original piece- clever how a little bit of the original wood still chinks out. The pattern is continued on the floor, showing that you can never have too many patterns in a scheme but to stop it becoming overwhelming the styling it kept simple and impactful. Love the oversized vase of flowers. This clearly is the most fabulous room in the house!
So…the regional winners.
I’ve got a reputation for being anti-neutrals, but when it is done well, it looks fabulous. @theresagromski gives us a master class in texture tone and styling with this entry. This shot is so inviting and evocative you just want to be there, curled up with a good book. The shot is bathed in soft daylight that really picks out all the lovely textures that she has put together. She then keeps things fresh by peppering the shot with soft greenery.
There were a lot of fabulous bath entries this year and they were all incredible! But this room has even had an Instagram handle named after it so must be a worthy winner! I love that the pink roll top bath is centre stage and the cool blue walls really make it pop. The jungle print window blind and flamingo farmed print give this room a feeling of whimsy and escape. That I imagine is of high importance when you live with three boys!
@nido_uk entered her drool-worthy home multiple times so I got a great insight into this ladies unique sense of style. But it is this shot of her outside kitchen that had me stop in my tracks. I love the lines that are made by the lush hedging, the brick and the industrial conduit piping running between the wall lights. Great use of materials using rough-hewn timber and chunky Belfast sink against all these raw materials. And I was particularly overjoyed at how she styled her dining table in the foreground with a lovely botanical display. Top marks!
I was really impressed with this room design, as the room is such a compact and awkward shape and yet @loveallthingsquirky has made it feel and look really elegant and special. Her colour palette of blush pink and leaf green is heaven and ties in really well with the mural that is cleverly faced opposite the bed. She has then kept the bedroom feeling calm with plenty of soft greys, adding an element of texture where needed with the panelled wall. I love the shimmery frock hanging over the bed which stops it looking too over-styled and ‘hotel’.
I’d love to know what you guys think of the winners, it was such a hard job to decide as the quality of entries was just amazing. Another example of how instagram is fast becoming the best place to find your interior design inspiration and share ideas. Give these guys a follow, they are doing great things!
