Who’s spotted it?! Slowly but steadily Lilac has been gradually growing in popularity over the past couple of years and I’m here for it! As with all colour trends, we saw it in fashion first. It breaks my colourful heart that I am just too old to do the ironic purple hair rinse but that’s the beauty of interiors- you can relish all your colour crushes on your home and no one will judge you!
So for this month’s colour crush, blue rinses aside, I’ve dedicated to this most playful hue and blended it with another colour that’s been on the ‘naughty step’ in terms of trends for far too long in my opinion…yellow. Together they feel youthful, vibrant, joyful- like an expensive face serum for the home, they will knock years off any fusty interior. Maybe it’s the time of year, time of life, or time of this millennia, but I just need a boost of feel-good vibes and perky yellow with youthful lilac to appear to be just the tonic. And its outside my window too, the bluebells are out in the woods and looking lovely next to the first crop of dandelions.
To get this colour combination right it’s all about hitting those mid-tone pastels. Too pale and you are back in Nans-ville, too dark (that’s purple and gold) and it’s all a little bit Changing Rooms circa 1995. The colours you pick need to feel fresh, light and clean in order to appear modern. Because they are pretty colours I think you get the best impact by keeping it plain and avoiding the florals. Glossy perspex, cotton, tulle, plastic, glass or shiny ceramic all look great in the colour palette. Those of you who have studied Colour Psychology with me will know this is ideal for a forward-thinking Spring personality. There is nothing heavy about this look to pull you down, it’s all up-up-up and away.
